Welcome to the Discipline of Languages & Arts Education

We are a group of specialists working in the broad area of literacies, languages, literature, media, and expressive arts. Many modules are offered within the Cluster across a range of phase specialisations (Early Childhood Development (ECD), Foundation, Intermediate, Senior, Further Education and Training (FET), but in general these are our areas of academic and educational expertise:

  • English Education
  • isiZulu Education
  • Drama Education
  • Creative Arts Education

We believe these areas are central to the educational enterprise in South Africa since they promote multilingualism, human rights, and respect for diversity and difference.

This awareness can only be created and sustained through human interaction and our work as educationists in the broad area of multilingual education is to open and foster communication that is both sensitive to the needs of others, and also explicit in both its intentions and manifestations.

The development of articulate and nuanced communication and literacy skills is also key to the maintenance of academic freedom and civic responsibility. The Cluster is thus devoted to providing inservice and preservice education in aspects of the language and expressive arts through various qualifications offered by the Cluster. In addition, various communication modules are compulsory to support communicative competence and to enable access to the university environment, thus making the Cluster central to the School of Education

For a list of undergraduate modules we advise you to consult the College Handbook (available on the UKZN website) for more details.

We offer Postgraduate Certificates in Education (PGCE) in English Education, isiZulu Education, Drama Education, and Arts and Culture Education.

There is one postgraduate specialisation: Language and Media Studies at the Honours and Masters levels.

At Honours level, we offer modules in:

  • Language in Education
  • Narrative in Education
  • Critical Awareness of Language and Media
  • Language Learning and Teaching in Multicultural Societies
  • Understanding Academic Literacy

The postgraduate modules are all interdisciplinary, taught by specialists in various languages and language arts. These modules may be taken either through the medium of English or isiZulu.

The Language and Media Studies Masters qualification is only offered by full research dissertation. The dissertation may be written through the medium of English or isiZulu.

In the Cluster, our overall aim is to underpin all our teaching with the Constitution, UKZN’s Vision, Mission, Goals and Core Values, UKZN’s various policies, and the Higher Education and Teacher Education policies. We are also constantly engaging with the literacy imperatives of the country.
